Summer fun and fundraising - Part 1

We are extremely fortunate to have received very generous donations from two separate sources over the summer.

The first donation came from a fabulously fun (and luckily not too hot!) tennis fundraiser and dinner in June. This was organised by past Karen residents, Clare and Hugo Norman (now living near Winchester, UK), who drew together a great bunch of tennis players, who were equally good at digging deep into their pockets to help raise the phenomenal and record sum of 2,200 GBP.

Clare had prepared the most delicious dinner, and with free flowing drink and "on the ball" entertainment thrown in, the evening was always going to be a huge success. Many thanks to Clare and Hugo who really went the extra mile for us - and to all those who paid and played!

Coffee and kikoys

Many thanks to Clare Norman for organising a coffee morning and kikoy sale in aid of Friends of Dagoretti Children last week at her beautiful home near Winchester. When her coffee and mouthwatering muesli bars were not being consumed in the kitchen there was a rush on the kikoy towels, kikoys and notelets in the sitting room - 'product placement' was key and Clare and her team of models and sales agents did us proud - raising a phenomenal six hundred pounds at the final tally - which will go towards the educational costs of two of our students, whom this Winchester crowd have supported for over a year now! Many thanks to all who supported us again and to Clare for organising such a lovely morning!

Well Served by Winchester

Many thanks again to Clare Norman and her Winchester tennis players for raising the fabulous sum of 1,250 pounds sterling (Ksh 192,500) for FDC at her annual tennis fundraiser. This money will be supporting Alice Atieno and Sospeter Ngandu.

Alice is now in her second year at the Karen Technical Training Institute for the Deaf (please refer our post below for details) and will go on attachment in September which she is much looking forward to.

Sospeter Ngandu (pictured below) completed Muho Secondary School and to his credit scored a D plain grade at KCSE in 2014. He was not taken on by FDC for his academic potential but rather because his oldest sister, who was also supported by FDC, died tragically as she was just starting her first job – leaving her family without a breadwinner. In order to help his mother provide for his brother, FDC took on Sospeter and is now very pleased to help him with a catering course.

Anyone for Tennis?

On 18th June, 36 keen and willing tennis players met at Kingsgate club by the river in Winchester. We had a lovely morning with the sun obliging, so as well as tennis, people lounged around drinking coffee and eating the delicious muesli bars which have become a favourite at this tournament. We then had 50 people for lunch inside the clubhouse. Thanks to the team of helpers who helped with the food, flowers etc we raised £1,120 for Friends of Dagoretti Children and had a lovely time. See you next year!

And a word from the FDC crew - "Many thanks Clare (pictured above), for your enduring support and fundraising efforts from afar! Much appreciated by us and the students whom your tennis fundraiser supports - Zachariah Gakunju and Alice Atieno!"
